Scratched Into Our Souls

Talking Heads – “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)” | July 15, 2010

It finally feels like summer in southern California. After a mild June and two weeks of gloom in July, the heat wave has arrived in full force. There aren’t many ways to prevent feeling the effects of the hundred-plus degree temperature outside, either, making the weather all that much more difficult to suffer through. There’s only so many fudge-sicles one can eat in a day before a sickly stomach-ache adds to the impenetrable heat.

Of course, there’s always music to take your mind off of the heat for a little while, and what better way to announce summer’s official arrival than with the bright funk-rock of The Talking Heads? Certainly they are ranked as one of the most underrated bands of all time, but a close look over their discography reveals something truly amazing: the band has at least six albums that could be considered classics. Only one could be considered their magnum opus, though, and that must surely be 1982’s Remain In Light, a top-to-bottom masterpiece of art rock sensibility and polyrhythmic funk, all tied up in a glorious psychedelic mess.

The opening track to that album gets things started in that very fashion. From that drum hit that sounds like a snapping-into-consciousness, the music swirls and pulsates around you in such a way that you almost feel like you’re falling alongside Alice down the rabbit-hole into a wonderland of never-before-explored sonic territory. David Byrne perhaps sums up this journey best in his proclamation, “Find a little space, so we can move in-between in-between it.” Trying to wrap your head around these lyrics is as futile as trying to wrap your head around the music. You just have to let it wash over you and experience it in it’s unruly brilliance.

Appropriately on a day like today, the slow fade-out of the ending feels all the more poignant, with Byrne repeating “and the heat goes on…and the heat goes on…and the heat goes on…and the heat goes on…” The music may end, but days like today make me think the heat never will.
