Scratched Into Our Souls

Wavves – “Post Acid” | July 6, 2010

Without hesitation, I’ll be the first to admit that I have never been a big fan of Wavves, the lo-fi project of San Diego’s Nathan Williams. Last year’s Wavvves seemed like too much style, not enough substance, and the noisy haze that pervaded that album seemed more like an attempt to veil poorly written songs and cheap hooks than an important aesthetic choice.

With the subsequent popularity that came with the internet hype and good press from the likes of Pitchfork, Spin, and The A.V. Club, Williams has had the opportunity to use a full-blown recording studio for the songs on his newest record, the sunny and sprightly King of the Beach. While I remained a skeptic all the way up until the album’s release, I’m pleased to be able to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Wavves newest offering. The studio polish adds a refreshing element to his music that was otherwise missing, letting good songs shine on their own merit.

Granted, the album is still a bit hit-and-miss, but when it succeeds, it really works. First single “Post Acid” is the perfect example of everything going right for Wavves, after a year in which everything seemed to be going wrong, from bar-fights to the infamous stage meltdown at the Primavera Sound Festival. “Post Acid” is packed with hooks, propulsive pop-punk guitars, and an explosively catchy chorus of “I’m just having fun with you, with you, with you.” The production is noisy enough that all the parts still blend together, but clean enough that the melody still sits on top of all that noise. If Katy Perry’s “California Gurlz” doesn’t quite do it for you, “Post Acid” will make a trip to the beach seem absolutely necessary this summer.
